A contractor quoting a mini-split in Haines Borough has one job on the cooling side: confirm there is nothing to size for. Homes in Haines Borough, AK have essentially no cooling season — no month of the year is warm enough to call for it. That frees the load calculation to focus on how low outdoor temperatures drop and how long they hold there, because the heat pump's capacity at the coldest end of the range is what decides whether the system keeps up or falls short. Undersizing shows up in winter, not summer, and it shows up fast when temperatures push the equipment hard with no warm-weather idle to mask the gap.

Electrical service panels in houses built for an older generation of heating equipment were not sized for what a ductless mini-split draws at peak load. Half the homes in Haines Borough, Alaska were built in 1987 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). A contractor quoting a mini-split installation here checks the panel before pricing the indoor and outdoor units, and a panel that cannot carry the new load means an electrical upgrade comes first. That changes the scope of the job and the order in which work gets priced.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What Gets Installed

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house interior with sofa, table and chair, two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to an outdoor condenser unit beside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It draws room air across its coil and delivers conditioned air back into the space. Outside, the condenser unit sits on a pad or bracket against the exterior of the house and handles the heat exchange side of the system.

A refrigerant line set runs through a small hole in the wall to connect the two units, bundled alongside a condensate drain line and the power and communication wiring. A contractor also installs the mounting hardware, the wall sleeve, and any support brackets the outdoor unit requires for a secure, level placement.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece is positioned for your specific home.
