Step 1 of 3: Equipment

Electrical panels in housing stock this old were sized for whatever ran in them originally, and that original load is gone. What a mini-split draws is a different number from what the house was wired to handle, and a contractor has to open the panel and measure before the right unit can even be selected. Half the homes in Aleutians West Census Area, Alaska were built in 1990 or earlier (2020-2024 ACS 5-year). That vintage of construction is where mismatched service capacity shows up most often, and it is the variable that changes both the scope and the price of an installation before the equipment question is settled.

The Parts of a Mini-split System and What HVAC Installation Covers

Isometric illustration of a cutaway house with two rooms, showing two wall-mounted indoor air conditioning units connected by lines to a single outdoor condenser unit outside the building.

The indoor air handler mounts high on an interior wall inside the room being conditioned. It draws in room air, moves it across the coil inside the unit, and delivers conditioned air back into the space. The outdoor condenser sits on the ground or a bracket outside the home and houses the compressor and the coil that faces the exterior.

A refrigerant line set runs between the two units through a small opening in the wall, carrying refrigerant back and forth and also bundling the condensate drain line and the electrical connection between the two units. A disconnect box mounts on the exterior wall near the outdoor unit to allow the system to be safely isolated.

The drawing shows a typical layout, and a licensed contractor determines exactly how each piece positions and connects in your specific home.
